Do Tiles Need A CE Certification?

The structure of the European Union requires that a lot of commodities have a CE marking to ensure safety of use of that particular product. The CE marking means that tiles, which come under the category which have to have a CE marking have passed the building standards.

As part of a quality control drive the European Union has formed a rule that all building material must conform to the safety standards referred to in the directive. The products must fulfil certain requirements when they are incorporated, applied and assembled, and these safety measures are there to declare this. All construction material are said to be fit for CE rating if they meet certain requirements such as –

 Stability and mechanical resistance
Fires; and safely guarding yourself
Environmentally friendly
protected for health and hygiene
 Sound absorption
 Heat retention

Therefore all ceramic tiles entering the EFTA and the European Union market today must bear a CE marking and this rule became operational on 1 March 2006. This certification is essential to prove that the tiles do not pose any health problems and are perfectly suitable for use. These include all kinds of tiles such as wall, floor, glazed, polished and several others kinds of tiles on the list. Tiles that are rated as CE compliant are tested for their water resistance, the level of heat and external pressure that they can withstand apart from certain other safety features.

There are two ways in which a product can be attested for CE marking. Firstly an approved certification body can test and certify that the product conforms to the European standards and secondly a declaration by the manufacturer can also confirm that it is suitable as per the requirements of the European construction directives. Certifying a product is safe for use is critical for manufacturers. The product in this case tiles, will then bear a mark, ensuring its’ safety.

Sound absorption is measured in terms of aw value that is calculated as per the EN ISO 11654 while the product standard depends on the EN ISO 354. The EN 13501- 1 checks the fire safety of a product, while the EN 717-1 relies on checks for the amount of formaldehyde in the product. They are then given an E1 or E2 rating. The E1 rating system usually determines the quality of the product, this is because it has a very low percentage of formaldehyde. External pressures such as humidity, heat, excessive load and water corrosion can reflect a products quality and durability.

Once the tiles have passed these tests as being compliant with the Construction Product Directive or CPD 89/106/EEC and meet the European standard for tiles EN 14411, they are declared fit for use and can freely be distributed in the European markets from where they can reach general consumers and building constructors. Knowing that the tiles have been checked for safety and are ready for use is really important to us; the CE marking on tiles gives us this peace of mind.

Conversely if you are lucky enough o have a huge farmhouse kitchen with large wooden furniture, then don’t opt for sleek, ultra modern tiles with white and chrome effect, since they too will look out of place.  But be careful not to use tiles that are too rustic or the kitchen may easily date.

If you are concerned that the tiles you like may not be completely suitable, then simply give yourself time to think before you make your final purchase.  Often things look very different after a day or so has passed, so don’t be rushed into anything.

Mosaic tiles can look chic in any kitchen, but again, opt for softer shades rather than bright turquoise or aqua marine, since these are really only suitable in small areas.  Mosaics are best as a feature within a tiled wall, rather than forming the wall itself out of mosaic: that went out of fashion in Roman times!

With these principles in mind, it should be easy to establish a cohesive and co-ordinating style for the tiled areas in your kitchen and the result will be a kitchen that does not date quickly and which still looks contemporary in a few years time.
