In an effort to stop this trend and place its name back at the top of the smartphone heap, Motorola has unveiled the Milestone XT720.

The Motorola Milestone XT720 differs slightly from previous handsets in that it is smaller and lighter. Its body measures 116 x 61 x 11mm and the phone weighs 160g. Immediately noticeable is the distinct shape of the Milestone. If you are looking at the phone in landscape mode, the top right juts out conspicuously from the rest of the shell. This is to house three lights that indicate which camera option the handset is currently in. Users may also notice the seemingly incompatible front and back sections of the device, pieces that seem to not fit together well. Samsung includes its own TouchWiz user interface on the Galaxy on top of Android 2.1. There might be a small learning curve for users familiar with the regular Android 2.1 interface, but TouchWiz has its own perks such as improvement to the notification bar. It maintains persistent shortcuts that allows users to toggle between vibrate and silent modes, Bluetooth, and WiFi. And the Samsung Galaxy puts its own spin on social networking with Social Hub. This function places Facebook, Myspace, and Twitter messages into one stream.

Bada, Samsung’s open mobile platform, experienced its debut via the Wave smartphone. Intended for release in new and growing markets such as Russia, the Wave 2 is intended as an introductory handset.

WiFi b/g/n is still found on the Wave 2, but Bluetooth v2.1 is included instead of 3.0. Additionally, the style of the Wave 2 Pro (the Wave 2’s companion) itself has changed somewhat from the Wave in that it features a slide out QWERTY keyboard. The standard Wave 2 is a touch only screen. The screen itself is a 3.2 inch version and the user interface is Samsung’s TouchWiz.

80MB of onboard memory are installed on the Samsung Wave 2 which can be amped up to 16MB by way of a microSD slot.
