HTC Desire : An Overview

HTC has been manufacturing smartphones for a number of years now, but it wasn’t until they switched to building them based on the Android operating system, that they started to see the success that has made them one of the big names in the market. Having created the Legend and Google’s Nexus One, HTC have now launched the HTC Desire. But what makes it better than the Legend, and as good as the Nexus One?

On the face of it, there doesn’t appear to be much difference between the Nexus One and the Desire. The Desire has a quality feel to it, even it it doesn’t benefit from the same unibody construction as the Nexus One. The touchscreen is a decent size and looks good, especially when you notice that it has both the traditional clickable buttons, as well as the additional ones located on the touchscreen. The optical trackball adds an air of sophistication without looking too delicate.

The HTC Desire complements its looks with top quality performance as well. The bright, clear images you see on the 3.7 inch AMOLED screen are delivered by a powerful 1GHz Snapdragon processor that can call on 512 MB of memory to make sure it’s able to handle just about any demands you place on it.

On the back of the HTC you’ll find the rather discreet 5 megapixel camera which also includes an LED flash, as well as autofocus, to help you get the best shots every time – and all in nice wide 5:3 format. There’s video capture on board as well, and although the HTC Desire doesn’t offer full 720p recording capabilities, it has a high enough resolution that means only the most demanding videographers would be disappointed.

The turning point that really kickstarted HTC’s recent success was a couple of years ago when they decided to adopt Android as their main operating system. Since then, they have continued to build on this platform, with the Desire offering the up to date 2.1 version, as well as a host of HTC interfaces that work really well with it. The Sense overlay provides an easy to use and enjoyable user interface, that also includes features like Friendstream and Leap. Friendstream makes managing all your social networking easy, and Leap does the same for your home screens, both ensuring that the Desire will be a popular choice among smartphone users.

With good looks, great technology and simple and enjoyable usability, there isn’t much you won’t like about the HTC Desire. A step up from the Legend, and more than a match for the Nexus One, the Desire can also take on any of the other smartphones in the market.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 – It’s Out And It’s Good!

Ericsson have been making mobile phones for about as long as the industry has been around, but it wasn’t until the Sony-Ericsson brand was developed that they started to see real success in what has become an incredibly competitive market. Their partnership with the Japanese electronics company has developed a range of popular phones, for users who wanted a phone that was also a great camera and music player. But with the demand for smarter phones, how does the new Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 fair?

The first thing you can’t help but notice about the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 is it’s huge 4 inch screen. IPhone 4 : Is It Worth The Money?

Apple recently launched its new iPhone 4, in its usual understated blaze of publicity. With the PR making excited claims that Apple customers finally had more of the features they had been asking for since the last iPhone, and the usual army of Apple fans desperate to be the first to get their hands on one, do all the new features and the new look live up to all the hype?

Whereas you’d be hard pushed to tell a 3G and a 3GS apart, the iPhone 4 has a completely new look. It’s flatter, thinner, and even die-hard 3GS fans would probably admit that it has a much more stylish, high-end look to it. But its looks are just the start, and the appearance of an extra camera on the front, and an LED flash for the main camera, give you an idea of the extra features that have been crammed into this smaller, better-looking iPhone.

The new display on the iPhone 4 is something that will impress a lot of old and new iPhone users. The number of pixels has been doubled, and the contrast increased, which gives the screen the ability to make web pages, emails, your photographs, and even high resolution video appear much brighter and clearer.

One of the criticisms of previous iPhones, has always been the camera. While fans have admired the look and functionality of the 3G and 3GS, many felt let down by a 3 megapixel camera and no flash. The iPhone 4 fixes that, and while the megapixels have only gone up to 5, the advancements in the software and light sensing technology mean that photos and video on the new iPhone look as good as those from some of the best camera phones on the market. The addition of a second camera for Apple’s ‘Facetime” video calling, and a flash to help in low-light conditions, help to boost the iPhone 4’s camera credentials.

The iPhone 4 also has a totally new operating system with some very nice features. You can now arrange all your homepage icons into folders, so you have all the similar ones in the same place, and can extend the number of icons you get onto your homescreens. Plus, genuine multitasking is now possible with the iPhone 4, letting you work in a number of different apps at the same time, easily choosing which one you want as the rest continue to run in the background.

The new iPhone 4 builds on the success of the 3GS and will no doubt take it up to another level. The great looks will appear to Apple fans old and new, and with features like the amazing display, better camera and functionality that users will love, the iPhone 4 is sure to prove a worthy successor to the 3GS, and a rival that the other manufacturers will have to work hard to beat.

The Samsung Galaxy – Is It Worth Buying?

The new iPhone 4 is already being hailed as the king of the smartphones, and it seems it’s getting harder for the other manufacturers to keep pace with Apple’s developments, and actually produce a smartphone that can put up a decent challenge. Well, Samsung has risen to that challenge with their latest offering, the Samsung Galaxy S – the best smartphone they have ever made. But is it a serious contender?

With it’s impressive 4 inch screen housed in a light plastic body with chrome trim, the Samsung smartphone certainly has the look of a high end smartphone. The Galaxy S appears to have been influenced more than a little by the design of the iPhone family, but this realization only reinforces the view that it is a very good looking phone.

If Samsung had simply included a large screen on the Galaxy S, they would have won a few fans. But the fact that it’s a high resolution Super AMOLED display is going to have a lot of people licking their lips. Bright, vibrant colors and clean, sharp images are matched by touchscreen functionality that responds perfectly to ever touch, and is a joy to use.

The camera on the Galaxy S is more than adequate, if not quite as impressive as the display. At 5 megapixels, it compares well with the iPhone 4 and is only less than a couple of other smartphones, but it comes with a range of settings and options that mean you have more flexibility to get exactly the shot you want. There’s no flash, but night mode and full 720p HD video recording add some more value.

Where the Samsung Galaxy S really comes into its own is when it’s playing media. Samsung has put a lot of time and effort into creating one of the best media players on the planet, and they’ve succeeded. There’s plenty of storage for your media for a start, up to 48GB. Videos look great on the Super AMOLED screen, and the music player provides amazing quality, with the Galaxy S offering virtual surround sound as well.

The latest Android operating system works well with Samsung’s own Touchwiz user interface, and the Galaxy S matches all the other smartphones on the connectivity front with data over 3G, WiFi capability, as well as Bluetooth and GPS. A powerful battery and nippy 1GHz processor make sure that, whatever the demands placed on it, the Galaxy S gives a smooth performance.

With a range of apps available from Android as well as Samsung’s own offerings, and full integration for all your communication, from e-mail to text, and social networks to instant messaging, the Samsung Galaxy S will make sure you stay in touch, the way you want to.

Is the Samsung Galaxy S an iPhone slayer? It’s hard to say. There are a lot of things it does very well, but we’ll have to see whether it does everything well enough to take on the smartphone king. One thing’s for sure, it’s certainly a genuine alternative to the Apple smartphone.

Information On The Motorola Milestone XT720

Motorola’s first incarnation of the Milestone included a full, slide out QWERTY keyboard in a smartphone packed full of features. However, the slide out keyboard received mixed reactions, and made the phone quite chunky; plus smartphones were moving on and touchscreens were becoming more popular. So the phone has been relaunched as the Motorola Milestone XT720, but has changing the keyboard improved the phone’s appeal in the competitive smartphone market?

When Motorola decide to revamp the original Milestone, losing the slide out keyboard didn’t just give them the chance to make the new Milestone XT720 slimmer and lighter, but also add in some new design tweaks as well. The new phone has a rather unique look therefore, a bit of a mix of the old and the new Milestone; but it has a quality look and feel to it, even if it isn’t going to win prizes for being the best looking smartphone on the market.

You can forgive the new Milestone its rather quirky shape, once you realize that it housing an impressive 8 megapixel camera. Other Android smartphones don’t even come close, with most of them having just 5, plus the Motorola Milestone XT720 moves even further ahead when you see that it offers full 720p video recording, as well as a host of photo features that include face detection, multi shot and image stabilization.

Another improvement from the original Milestone is the later version of the Android operating system that is installed on the Motorola Milestone XT720. This brings the smartphone right up to date, and means you can use apps from the Android Market to customize your phone. As you would expect form Motorola’s flagship smartphone, you get the usual connectivity features such as 3G, the latest Bluetooth and WiFi. The Motorola Milestone XT720 also has GPS and an FM radio, but with all these features, the processor does sometimes get a little overwhelmed, and the performance can suffer. However, wishing that the phone was a little faster on occasions is a small price to pay for all the positives.

The feature that dominates the Motorola Milestone XT720 is the excellent 8 megapixel camera and its associated features. Everything else is as you would expect for a smartphone from one of the leading manufacturers, so all in all the revamped Milestone is a serious contender in the market. It might not have the processing power to challenge the heavy weights like Apple, Google and HTC, but Motorola fans will be more than happy to overlook this tiny misgiving in favor of a combined smartphone package that is one of the best on the market.

A Look At The Nokia N8

For a name that’s as synonymous with mobile phones as Nokia, it’s sometimes hard to understand why they have never really been able to crack the smartphone market, at least not in the same way Apple and HTC have, and some of the other manufacturers are starting to. All this could be about to change however, as the Finnish mobile giant tries to make up for lost time and opportunities, with the launch of the N8. But does Nokia even know what it takes to make a competitive smartphone anymore, and if so, is the Nokia N8 it?

There’s no denying the Nokia N8 is a good looking phone, which is nothing new in today’s smartphone market, but is quite an achievement for Nokia. With attractive lines and good proportions it looks like Nokia has been taking design lessons. The shape and size are enhanced by the quality of the aluminum casing, which all works together to give the N8 the quality look and feel that offers a serious challenge to the current market leaders. The fact that there’s no way to remove the battery doesn’t just help make the phone look good, but also sends the message that Nokia have got the operating system right as well, and you won’t be fiddling around with the battery to try and reset your phone.

The N8 has the required touchscreen display of any serious smartphone contender, and at 3.5 inches it’s more than adequate, for users and to keep up with the competition. What will grab your attention however, is the incredible 12 megapixel camera with xenon flash that is very neatly housed in the N8’s slimline body, capable of amazing photographs, as well as 720p HD video recording, with an mini HDMI output for playback on larger screens. Nokia may be trying to make a bit of a point with what it says is the best phone camera in the world, and it has succeeded. Better than any other available smartphone, it makes the N8 stand out from the crowd for the right reasons, and will make sure it gets some serious consideration alongside the top smartphones.

Nokia was keen to make sure the N8 wasn’t just a one trick pony, and the amazing camera is only part of the N8’s story. It also gets a new operating system, being the first phone to offer the Symbian 3 platform. A powerful processor makes sure everything zips along nicely, and with 16GB of storage for your music files, and an attractive player to make the most of them, the N8 certainly has a few more tricks up its sleeve.

It may be that Nokia has left it too late to come up with anything that is going to seriously challenge the iPhone and other top smartphones, but the Nokia N8 is undoubtedly the Finnish giant’s best shot. If all the latest tech and software work well together, the other smartphone manufacturers will have to start taking Nokia seriously again.

LG Optimus : An Impressive Phone

Long renowned for the quality of their phones, LG have followed demand and started to develop a range of mobiles that will try to challenge in the smartphone market. The LG Optimus is the latest edition to LG’s smartphone stable, and comes with quite an impressive spec. But is it enough to take on the likes of Apple, Google and HTC?

The Optimus is another example of LG’s ability to make good looking phones. The phone’s design and quality finish mean that, not only will you be more than happy to be seen using it, it is easy and comfortable to handle when you do; and even with a decent sized touchscreen, the phone is easily carried in your pocket or purse.

There are smartphones which are available with bigger screens than the Optimus, but at 3 inches it can easily cope with webpages, images and movies, without it feeling like it’s not big enough. The display is bright and clear, and the Optimus’s accelerometer makes the touchscreen simple to use, whichever way up you want to hold the phone.

The Optimus has the standard 3G and Bluetooth connectivity, and like all the other smartphones on the market, it also allows the user to connect to WiFi networks for a faster browsing and download experience. With more people using their smartphones to access the top social networking sites, the Optimus’s built in features have got real-time Facebook and Twitter updates covered.

Using the Android 1.6 version, the Optimus has a slightly outdated operating system when compared to some of the other Android phones on the market, but it is more than enough for an entry-level smartphone. Overall performance is excellent, and with your choice of apps from the Android Market, and good battery life, most users will find it is more than enough for what they need from a smartphone.

The Optimus only has a 3 megapixel camera, which does let it down slightly, but it still performs well in most environments, especially with the autofocus making things easier. The lack of a flash and video capture at only 17 frames per second isn’t ideal, but it won’t stop most people getting what they want from the camera.

While the LG Optimus might not be up their with the iPhone 4 or Google’s Nexus One, it doesn’t aim to be. LG have set about creating a feature-packed smartphone for the mid market, and have done a pretty good job. This good-looking touchscreen phone makes up for its shortcomings by providing smartphone features that won’t hurt your pocket.

Blackberry Curve Review

Blackberry’s innovative smartphones have long been the preserve of the power dressing professional types, who saw them as the ultimate corporate fashion accessory as much as an essential business tool. The Curve is one of a new breed of phones from Blackberry that is designed to take advantage of the everyday consumer’s demand for smartphone functionality and interesting looks. But can the Blackberry Curve make the jump from business to pleasure, in an already crowded and competitive market?

The Curve looks unmistakably Blackberry, with its wide body and the trademark full QWERTY keyboard laid out over dozens of keys. While this may be an acquired taste, it does mean that the Curve has a decent sized screen, and unusually for the majority of phones on the market, it’s landscape layout gives it quite a nice widescreen appearance. To help convince consumers that the Curve doesn’t take itself too seriously, it comes in a variety of different colors, although most will probably want to stick to the basic black.

If you put the new Curve next to some of Blackberry’s business phones, you’d also notice a few other subtle differences. The chrome trim on the business versions has been replaced with rubber edges, and the trackball has become a track pad. Designed to cut costs as well as make the Curve a little more down to earth, the phone still looks and feels like a quality smartphone.

Blackberry hopes that consumers will love the Curve for the same reasons that business users have loved the other Blackberrys, and that’s for keeping in touch. With more and more smartphones being used for email and social networking, the Curve’s software and QWERTY keyboard, plus it’s WiFi connectivity, mean it’s ideal for this purpose, even if it lacks the 3G and GPS features of it’s more expensive smartphone competitors.

Navigating around the Curve is nice and simple, thanks to Blackberry’s operating system and the user-friendly interface. You can add to the pre-installed apps thanks to the App World, and the music player is better than many would expect – the Curve even includes dedicated music control keys, to make it more appealing to consumers.

With the smartphone market dominated by the three or four big names, it looks like Blackberry is going to make the most of its business experience and provide a cheaper alternative that gives users what they want, in a way that lets them be a little different to the rest of the Apple, Google and HTC crowd.

Blackberry Bold : An Overview

Most people know that a Blackberry is a business mobile, and while it’s not a criticism, it’s one of the reasons Blackberry have found it hard to really compete in the non-business smartphone market. Without abandoning their roots, they have made some improvements to the new Blackberry Bold, which will hopefully win it some more fans who see it as the ideal smartphone for work, and play.

In fairness to Blackberry, they have stuck to the kind of style and design that has won them plenty of business customers, and looked at ways to make this appeal-able to the consumer market, rather than try and create a non business version of their phones. The improvements to the new Bold have created a sleeker, good looking smartphone, its just a question of whether you are a fan of the QWERTY keyboard, or not. The Bold’s high resolution screen benefits from the excellent pixel density, which makes it easy to watch movies and images on the Blackberry’s ‘widescreen’ layout; and reading the text on webpages and in messages is even easier on the eye, thanks to the crisp and clear display.

As you’d expect from a smartphone manufacturer that keeps the business world in touch with itself, the Bold has the full range of connectivity options, with 3G data handling, as well as EDGE and GPRS. There’s the latest Bluetooth and WiFi, and you also get GPS, although Blackberry Maps isn’t likely to have Google too worried. With digital zoom, autofocus, and an LED flash, the 3.2 megapixel camera will be more than enough for what most people will want to use it for, and there is also the capability to record HVGA video.

The Bold has also seen an improvement in its operating system, with the new Blackberry 5 OS. It’s designed to be more user-friendly and intuitive, with a better design and layout that should be more appealing to the non-business user. The new Bold has better media integration, so images, movies and music are now a part of the interface, and not just an add on. The web browser performs well but can be a little slow on content rich sites. One thing you would expect the Blackberry Bold to be good at is communicating, and it doesn’t disappoint. Integrated messaging and apps like Facebook Connect make keeping in touch easy and fun.

With improved looks that will help the Bold’s unique look appeal to a wider audience of non-business users, and a better user interface that will be more in keeping with what the majority of smartphone users are looking for, the latest Bold could have what it needs to convince people it’s not all work and no play.

The Feature Packed Samsung Wave 2

The Samsung Wave 2 follows hot on the tail of the original Wave, which was Samsung’s first smartphone to use their own operating platform, called Bada. The Wave got a good reception, which had as much to do with all the top technology and features Samsung included, as it did their Bada platform; but what does the Samsung Wave 2 offer mobile users, and will it be as popular as its older brother?

The new Wave 2 carries on where the previous phone left off, and has the necessary good looks it takes for a smartphone to make it these days. The screen is a good size at 3.2 inches, although Samsung has opted for a TFT display to replace the original Wave’s better quality AMOLED screen, in an effort to trim some cost from the phone. Using the touchscreen is as easy as you would expect, and the inclusion of an accelerometer means it quickly adapts to suit whichever way you want to view the phone.

As you would expect from a manufacturer such as Samsung, the Wave 2 offers plenty of connectivity options, and even though it relies on GPRS and EDGE rather than 3G, it uses the latest Bluetooth, WiFi and GPS to keep users in touch, wherever they may be. There is also an FM radio, which often gets overlooked in some of the other smartphones, and the handy feature that lets you record direct from the radio is a bonus.

Probably one of the more interesting aspects of the Wave 2 is Samsung’s own Bada operating platform. The mobile manufacturer is committed to developing more of their phones on this platform, even though many feel the market it already overcrowded. With support for developers, to make sure Bada gets the features and apps that it needs to be a success, Samsung is pinning its hopes on the Wave 2 to introduce and promote Bada to a wider audience.

The benefits of using their own Bada system become clear when you see that users will also be able to use the enjoyable Touchwiz interface, as well as the social networking manager Social Hub. Any additional features users might want can be provided by Samsung Apps. The original Wave’s 5 megapixel camera has been replaced with a reduced 3.2 megapixel version, which still performs well and also offers video capture capability.

Some might feel that the Samsung Wave 2 is actually a step backwards from the original Wave, but in the same way that the prototype cars you see at motor shows give birth to more usable and affordable road-going versions, Samsung’s Wave 2 will take their Bada operating platform to a much wider audience of smartphone users. Samsung has made Bada, and their other proprietary smartphone software, likeable, and the Wave 2 will help to make it popular.
